Pie Republic

Seoul’s South African pie shop since 2019

Pie Republic

A taste of South Africa in Hongdae

Tucked down a basement staircase just steps from Hongik University Station, Pie Republic is the kind of place you could easily walk past and would deeply regret missing. Open since April 2019, it has spent years quietly winning over Seoul’s expat community and curious locals alike, serving up something you simply won’t find anywhere else in the city. Born from the same DNA as the beloved Braai Republic in Itaewon, this is a pie shop with serious South African pedigree, and savory meat pies that go perfectly with a cold beer. The space is small, the menu is focused, and the cooking is done with patience. Whether it’s a grey rainy afternoon or a Friday night in Hongdae, a visit here has a way of lifting the whole day.

What's on the menu?

Forget everything you think you know about pie. The savory pies here are unlike anything else you’ll find in Seoul Restaurant Guru and they’re worth every minute of the wait.

The Lamb Pie is the one to start with: handmade with special South African dough, slow-cooked in South African wine with added spices for four hours until perfectly soft and juicy. The Pepper Steak Pie is a close contender, prime beef seasoned with black pepper and herbs, finished with a splash of KWV brandy. And if you’re skipping meat, the Spinach & Feta Roll delivers: fresh spinach, feta, lemon zest and fennel seed in a savoury pastry that holds its own against anything else on the menu. Pair it all with creamy mash, and you’re set.

Budget: 10,000 – 30,000 KRW per person
