A taste of North Africa hidden in Suwon

You would not stumble upon Bella Tunisia by accident. You have to know it is there, down a staircase just outside the gates of Sungkyunkwan University’s Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. But the people who do know about it — international students, curious Korean couples, expats living south of Seoul — tend to keep coming back. The restaurant has been running for over six years, operated by a young Tunisian man who cooks, serves and runs the entire operation solo. The decor evokes the warmth of a traditional Tunisian villa, the kitchen is open-concept, and you order directly from the window. It is one of those places that feels like a discovery every time you visit.
Tunisia’s culinary heritage is a layered thing — Arab, Berber, Turkish and Italian traditions all folded into a Mediterranean base built on olive oil, tomatoes, seafood, meat and a serious array of spices: cumin, cardamom, coriander, paprika. Bella Tunisia does not simplify any of that. It brings it as it is, at prices that make it genuinely accessible to the university crowd around it.

The menu covers the full range of North African Mediterranean classics. Hummus comes in multiple variations — plain, pesto, harissa, beef, chicken and lamb — and pairs perfectly with the house tortillas. The falafel arrives in six crispy pieces, golden on the outside and moist inside. The Chicken Tagine is the dish to order: half-chicken roasted with a light coating of spices, served with fragrant rice and a small mixed salad. The Mixed Kebab is another solid main, and the fries and tortillas make for excellent sides. Everything is halal.
Budget: 1,000 – 15,000 KRW per person
